Miramar, Fla. - Freshman pair Glenn Mbamo and Gabriela Sanchez finally wrapped up their first collegiate track and field season at the USATF U20 Championships this past weekend competing against some of the best junior track and field athletes in the country. Serving as the selection event for the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships, the stiff national competition would prove to be a great learning experience for the young Gauchos as Sanchez would take 12th in the discus throw on Saturday while Mbamo would finish 11th in the triple jump Sunday evening.
For her three attempts in the discus on Saturday, Sanchez would start off with a decent 42.72m (140' 2") to complete her first round throw followed by a foul in the second. Putting things together for her third attempt, she'd end up with a mark of 44.12m (144' 9") to cap off her season, getting a first quick taste of competing late in the summer season.
Mbamo would have some difficulties at the start of the triple jump competition, amassing only fouls for his first two attempts on the runway. Despite this, he'd still be able to put a mark down with a 13.81m (45' 3.75") on his final attempt, concluding his own extended season as well.
"Overall we garnered decent performances from the freshman," remarked assistant coach Robert Marlow. "More importantly however they had the opportunity to be exposed to high level competitors and performances that they will inevitably see again in future championship meets."
