Derek Masterson, a three-time Big West Champion is going into his second season as a Gaucho Assistant Coach. 

In 2014, Masterson placed ninth at the USATF Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the decathlon, qualifying for the Pan Am Cup. He placed ninth at the Pan Am Cup in his first Team USA Appearance. 

After defending his Big West conference decathlon title in 2013, Masterson set a new personal best in Dallas at the TGA Invite with a score of 7,631. He recorded the 20th best decathlon score in the US in 2013. Masterson was a pivotal part of the Gauchos 2012 Big West Team Championship and throughout his career he scored in the high jump, javelin, pole vault, long jump and decathlon at the Big West Championships. 

He was an NCAA qualifier in 2012 after recording a 7,558 effort at the Sam Adams Multi Event Competition here in Santa Barbara. He is a talented javelin thrower, winning the 2013 Big West Championships with a throw of 218'4. Masterson twice qualified for the NCAA First Round competition in the javelin. 

Masterson received his degree in Environmental Studies and looks to pursue a career with NOAA working with global weather systems.
