Ryan Martin rejoins the Gauchos after a stellar career which culminated under Oregon's Historic Hayward Field lights, in the 2012 Olympic Trials 800m final, where he went on to finish 4th with a 1:44.90 effort.
Spectators at Big West Championships meets from 2010-2012
witnessed some of the best 800m battles in NCAA history with Martin
battling UC Irvine's Charles Jock. In their first conference
meeting in 2010, Jock went on to take the win in 1:46.93 to Ryan's
1:48.43- a winning margin that would soon tighten. Over the next
two Big West meetings, the total difference between the two men
would be a staggering .08.
Martin got the best of Jock at the 2011 Big West Championships running a new lifetime best of 1:45.34 to take the win against Jock's 1:45.40- A race forever imprinted on the July 2011 cover of Track and Field News with the title "Big 800 at The Big West."
The Gaucho men were in the middle of a team title hunt when Martin and Jock took the line at the 2012 Big West 800m final. The field events stopped and the crowd fell silent as two of the best 800m warriors in NCAA history traded punches in another classic Big West showdown. Jock took it out hard with Martin in close contact through the first quarter. As Jock accelerated down the back stretch he put a few meters onto his lead, which seemed to grow into the last curve. Martin started building at the 200m to go mark and steadily built steam into the final straight- both men now wide open and holding the smooth form of world-class mid-distance runners. Martin made one final surge at the tape but it was Jock who held on for the victory.
As the dust settled, Jock glanced at the scoreboard to see his winning time of 1:44.75 flash across. He embraced Martin briefly as the two men showed the mutual respect for one another that provided these transcendent races. As Martin turned away, gasping for air he too saw the board as it read his time of 1:44.77. Jock would leave UC Irvine's Anteater stadium as the 7th fastest NCAA 800m runner of all-time. Martin would earn 8th all-time in the books.
In total, Martin captured 3 All-American awards and would lead
the Gaucho men to the 2012 Big West team championship, splitting a
45.8 in the 4 x 400m relay in another battle with Jock.
Martin will assist with the Gaucho cross country and distance groups and currently runs for Asics. Martin graduated with degrees in Business Economics and Art History.
