Top-Times and Marks Set at Cal/Nevada Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The UCSB team was split between three different meets this past weekend across the state but all bringing home some big wins. At the Cal/Nevada Championships held at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday and Sunday, UCSB came in third overall with 88 points for the men's side and fifth overall with 78 points for the women's side.

In the jumps, Max Villalba reached a height of 6'8.75" in the high jump to tie for third and Mitchell Haag reached a height of 6'6.75" to tie for fourth. Mike Larocca jumped 6'2.75" to tie for eighth. In the men's pole vault, Taylor Duncan earned eighth place for his height of 15'5".

In the women's long jump, Tayler Williams finished 11th with a mark of 18'0.25" and Veronica Gines jumping 17'5.25". Chris Brooks earned 13th in the men's long jump with a mark of 21'8.25". Karlon Johnson placed ninth in the men's triple jump at a distance of 46'2.75". Williams and Symone Evans participated in the triple jump with marks of 37'9.25" and 36'1.25" respectively.

In the throws, Jean Lightfoot earned third with her mark of 47'9.75" in the shot put while Alex Francis's farthest throw was 40'5". In men's discus, Julian Samson took fourth by throwing 168'10" while Josh Scherer finished ninth with his throw of 154'8". Kathleen Guzman participated in the women's discus and threw 131'3".

Adam Shigem earned seventh overall in the men's hammer throw and throwing 178'2" while Julian Samson also competed in the hammer, tossing 162'4". On the women's side, Alex Francis threw 160'5" for seventh place and Alyssa Manning threw 129'11. Grace Esslinger represented the Gaucho's in the javelin throw and placed ninth overall with her farthest mark measuring 125'2". In the sprints, Beidi Beer placed seventh in the men's 100m dash in 10.73 but ran 10.55 in the preliminaries which gives him the fastest time in the 100m for the Big West conference this season. Snita Ashford finished in ninth place for the women in a time of 12.23 while Kelsey Bolden ran 12.12 in the preliminaries. Jacob Vowels ran 22.06 in the men's 200m during the preliminary round to place 11th overall. In the men's 400m, James Martin ran 48.74 for seventh overall and Winton Nguyen came in ninth with a time of 49.92. Jessica Johnson placed fourth for the women in a time of 55.94.

Ryan Martin ran 1:47.93 for second place in the 800m run while Greg Dotson came in at 1:52.87 for sixth and Rusty Parker following close behind in 1:53.30 for seventh. Justine Diaz won the women's 800m run in 2:10.07 and currently holds the fastest time in the Big West conference. Sarah Vitug finished in seventh at 2:13.9. Tyler Brady ran 4:02.23 for 17th place in the men's 1500m run. For the women, Callie Mulgannon earned third with a time of 4:39.19 and Cassie coming in at 4:41.49 for fourth.

Juan Paredes finished strong in the 5,000m run in 14:39.07 and good for second place. Michael Wysocki blazed through the finish line with a time of 31:27.10 in the 10,000m run to win the race. Megan Petkovic came in sixth for the women in 37:55.48 and Christine Cooperstein ran 38:16.60.

Sean Johnson ran the 110m hurdles in 15.06 and Symone Evans ran the 100m hurdles in 15.35. André Piñon placed fifth overall in the 400m hurdles in 52.77 and Alvin Go finished 10th in 54.40. In the women's 400m hurdles, Aislynn Mueller clocked in 1:03.34 and Emily Gordon finished in 1:04.04. Jordan Scott ran 47.98 to place third in the men's 400m dash and earning him a spot on the Gauchos all-time 400m list.

Anthony Masci took home third in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:21.81 and Andrew Salinas clocked in 9:45.54. Andrea Jacobs finished strong in the steeplechase with a time of 10:51.70 and Ari Selix finished third in 11.25.32.

The relay team composed of Beer, Vowels, Walker and Harvey finished eighth in the men's 4x100m event in 42.49. The women's 4x100m team placed 10th with a time of 48.35. The women's 4x400m team composed of Rodriguez, Diaz, Carey and Johnson ran 3:48.18 to earn fourth

The Gauchos will return to the track on April 1-2 at the Cal Poly Invitational held in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
