March 18, 2007
Senior Amy Haapanen led the Gauchos on Saturday at the Northridge Invitational as she threw a personal-best and number two mark in the nation of 212-00 in the hammer leading UCSB on a day when they collected two school records, added six marks to the top 10 all-time list and three new conference qualifiers.
Haapanen, a red-shirt senior from Manteca, broke her own conference record and school record in the hammer for the third time this year as was the top collegian in the event. Also in the shot put Haapanen had a seasonal best of 50-01.75 for second place followed closely by senior Heather Quinn in a seasonal best of 47-04.50. Freshman Kayla Smith and junior Jamie Schwarzbach turned in personal bests in the shot put of 44-11.75 and 42-09.75. Smith and Schwarzbach now sit in fourth and sixth on the UCSB top 10 all-time list.
Continuing the Gaucho's success in the shot put was junior Scott Anderson taking a school record of his own with a huge toss of 58-02.00 breaking a 39 year-old school record of 57-07.50 held by Clark Chelsey.
UCSB garnered it's loan victory of the day in the 4 x 1600 meter relay in a time of 17:24.69 in a meet with both professional and collegiate runners. Sophomore Elmer Guzman and freshman Andrew Johnston qualified for conference with personal best in the hurdles, Guzman in the 400 hurdles in a time of 54.67 and Johnston in the 110 high hurdles in a time of 15.30.
On Thursday and Friday senior Katie Kramer and junior Lauri Schakett competed in the heptathlon recording personal bests and finishing second and third in their section, respectively. Kramer scored 4465 points scoring almost 300 points then her all-time best and moving to number 5 on the list while Schakett was just 9 points behind in 4456 and achieved a conference qualifier in the 100 hurdles along the way.
Only a handful of Gauchos will compete next week due to finals, and the team will return to action as a full squad the following week when they split for two big meets - the Stanford Invitational and Cal/Nevada Championships.
