The Gauchos were defeated in straight sets by the UCLA Bruins in front of 860 spectators on Friday night, extending their current losing streak to three matches. With the loss, UCSB falls to 2-5 (0-3 MPSF), while UCLA remains hot out of the gate with a mark of 9-1 (4-0 MPSF). Game scores for the match were 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.
As has been the problem so far this season, UCSB's team blocking was not up to par with their opponent. The Bruins outblocked UCSB 12-6 for the match, and hit a robust .432 for the match. Junior middle blocker Dylan Davis improved on his recent form, picking up four blocks on the evening after only recording a total of three over his last three matches.
Only one player was able to reach double-digits in kills- UCLA's Jeremy Casebeer, who finished with 10. UCSB was led by senior outside hitter Blaine Nielsen's nine kills. Blaine had an especially efficient night, hitting .389, bested on his own team only by sophomore middle blocker Evan Licht's .444.
Licht tallied five kills on the night and also led all players with two service aces.
It was the first match of the season that a Gaucho failed to record 10 or more kills. It was also the first match of the season in which junior outside hitter Miles Evans did not lead the team in kills.
For the match, UCLA recorded eight total attacking errors. The Gauchos had seven in each of the three games.
UCSB will look to right the ship next week, as they return to the Los Angeles area for a pair of matches. First up is a match at USC on Wednesday, Feb. 1, followed by a tilt at Pepperdine on Friday, Feb. 3.
