UCSB Defeated 3-1 by Reigning National Champion UC Irvine

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team opened its regular season Friday with a 3-1 loss against reigning national champion and fifth-ranked UC Irvine in first round play of the Elephant Bar Restaurant Collegiate Invitational at Robertson Gymnasium. The Gauchos will play Cal State Northridge in the second round while the Anteaters will take on Stanford Friday evening.

UC Irvine (2-0) came out tough and won the first two games by scores of 30-21 and 30-26. UCSB (0-1) recovered to take game three 30-28, but the Anteaters eked out a 35-33 victory in the fourth and deciding frame.

Freshman Jeff Menzel had a team-high 21 kills for Santa Barbara. Sam Moisenco followed with 12 kills and he hit .571 with no errors in 21 swings in the middle. He and Scott Slaughter each blocked four balls. Setter Max Klineman totaled 54 assists and had six kills and no errors in nine attempts to hit .667. On the defensive end, Andy McGuire posted a match-high 19 digs and Phil Mathews had 10.

The Anteaters had four players hit double digits in kills - Taylor Wilson (22), Jordan DuFault (14), Cory Yoder (13), and Aaron Harrell (11). Setter Anthony Spittle registered 57 assists, while Brent Asuka had 12 digs. Wilson had seven blocks and Brett Kohout had six as Irvine out-blocked UCSB 13.5 to 9.0.

In other first round action, Alberta defeated Pacific 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 30-19), Long Beach State took down USC 3-0 (30-27, 30-22, 30-24), and Stanford topped Cal State Northridge 3-1 (30-27, 30-25, 28-30, 32-30).

In Friday night's second round, Alberta will face Long Beach State, UC Irvine gets Stanford, USC goes up against Pacific, and Northridge battles with host UCSB. All of the matches are slated for a 7 p.m. first serve. The CSUN/UCSB match is in Robertson Gymnasium, while the other three contests are at the Thunderdome.

The tournament concludes Saturday with matches at 11 a.m. (7th/8th place), 1:30 p.m. (5th/6th place), 4 p.m. (consolation), and 6:30 p.m. (championship). All four matches will be held at Robertson Gymnasium.
