Gauchos Eighth, CSUN Wins Second Straight Santa Barbara Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.-Scott Slaughter led the No. 14 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team with a .769 hitting percentage, but the Gauchos could not crawl back from a two-set deficit against No. 13 UC San Diego in the seventh-place match of the Santa Barbara Invitational, falling to the Tritons 3-2 Friday morning at Robertson Gymnasium. No. 9 Cal State Northridge downed No. 6 BYU in four sets to win its second straight UCSB tourney.

Slaughter connected on 10 of his 13 total attack attempts with no errors in his first action of the season. He had missed the previous two matches while nursing a hand injury. Jeff Menzel led the Gauchos with 26.5 points and 22 kills. Cullen Irons added 15 kills and three aces. Setter Vince Devany dished out a season-high 61 assists.

Frank Fritsch led the way for the UCSD, collecting a match-high 27 kills on 49 attacks. Will Ehrman and Cyrus Kiani totaled 17 and 14 kills, respectively.

UCSD out-hit the Gauchos .368 (83-26-155) to .287 (66-23-150).

In the title match, Tournament Most Valuable Player Kevin McKniff dropped 15 kills while swinging at a .538 clip for CSUN. Theo Edwards led the Matadors with 17 kills, while Tanner Nua and Jacek Ratajczak each had 11 kills. Andrew Stewart paced the Cougars with 17 kills and Jeff Robinson scooped a match-high 13 digs.

Cal Baptist swept No. 8 UCLA in the third place match and No. 2 UC Irvine, the defending national champion, overtook No. 7 Long Beach State, 3-1, in the fifth place match.

UCSB opens its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season Wednesday, Jan. 13 as it hosts Long Beach State at 7 p.m.

The Athletics Ticket Office now has two parking spaces adjacent to the ICA Building and is open on Saturdays, making it easier than ever for fans to purchase tickets. The Ticket Office will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The two parking spots, designated specifically for the Ticket Office, are already available during weekday hours, which are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
