LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 9 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team swept UC San Diego 30-24, 30-23, 30-24 on Thursday night, bringing the Gauchos to 5-6 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while UCSD drops to 1-8, 0-6 MPSF.

The Gauchos played without junior opposite Evan Patak for the second straight match, but Aaron Richman came through in his absence with 16 kills on top of Michael Fisher's nine.

As a team, UCSB hit for a .533 clip while the Tritons could only muster a .287 percentage.

Russ Hardy (13 kills) and Jon Daze (10 kills) led the Tritons. John Mark Wendler and Brenden Bowe added seven kills apiece. Brooks Dierdorff had 43 assists and Harry Campbell added four kills in five attempts.

In game one, UCSD fell behind early and closed to within 17-15, but the Gauchos would put a late run together, scoring seven of the last 11 points to take game one 30-24.

UCSD hit .345 in game two, but was outdone by UCSB who hit at a .609 clip. UCSB took game two 30-23.

In game three, UCSD fell behind 18-12, but would put a run together and cut the deficit to 20-18 after a UCSB attack error. The Tritons could not overcome the Gauchos who hit .533 for the match as UCSB won game three 30-24.

UCSB is back in action Saturday when they return home to face UC Santa Cruz for a 5:00 match in Robertson Gym.
