Los Angeles, Calif. - Evan Patak had 25 kills, 6 blocks and 3 aces to help the No. 11 UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team beat No. 12 USC, 30-27, 26-30, 30-28, 30-25, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday in USC's Lyon Center.
The Gauchos improved to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in the MPSF, while the Trojans dropped its fourth straight match to fall to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the MPSF.
For USC, Juan Figueroa had a match-best 26 kills while hitting .455, Andrew Vernon added 12 kills and 5 blocks, C.J. Schellenberg had 11 kills, Joao Grangerio had 10 kills, 7 digs, 5 blocks and 3 aces and Luke Morris had a match-high 11 digs.
Statistically, the teams were nearly even. UCSB hit .397 with 10.5 blocks, 33 digs and 4 aces, while USC hit .359 with 11.5 blocks, 31 digs and 4 aces.
UCSB took an early 8-5 lead in the first game and never surrendered it, although USC closed to within a point as late as 27-26. The tables turned in the second game as Troy jumped out to an 8-3 lead and the Gauchos couldn't catch up. The third game was tight throughout before a Trojan hitting error and then a solo block by Michael Fisher gave UCSB a cushion at 29-27. Game four was tied at 12-12 before UCSB steadily pulled away.
The Gauchos return to action this Friday when they host Cal Baptist at 7:05 at Robertson Gym.
