GAUCHOS BLANK UNRANKED STANFORD
With a team attack percentage of .478, UCSB rolled past unranked Stanford, 3-0, Saturday at Burnham Pavilion to earn its third-straight victory. The Gauchos, who were led offensively by Evan Patak with a match-high 15 kills, out-blocked the Cardinal 11-4. Game scores went 30-21, 30-25, and 30-21 and it took just an hour and twenty minutes for the Gauchos to put away the Cardinal. Patak led a trio of Gauchos that had double-digit kill numbers, including Theo Brunner and David Kennedy, who each posted 12. Armen Zakarian had four kills and no errors in eight attacks and added a match-best 12 digs. At the net, Brunner totaled five blocks and Zakarian checked in with four. Kennedy and Patak had three stuffs apiece. Stanford got 13 kills from Matt Ceran and Evan Romero, and another 10 out of Brandon Williams. Kawikia Shoji had a team-high six digs. The Cardinal hit .257 for the match.
UCSB COMES BACK AGAINST PACIFIC TO WIN MPSF OPENER, 3-2
UCSB overcame a two-game deficit to defeat Pacific, 3-2, Friday at the Spanos Center. Evan Patak put down a season-high 40 kills in the MPSF opener for both squads. Scores of the match were 29-31, 29-31, 30-23, 33-31, and 15-12. Not only did Patak have the 40 kills, he added a match-high six service aces, a match-high 13 digs, and four blocks. Theo Brunner amassed 23 kills and hit .667 and David Kennedy dropped down 11 kills and a match-high six blocks. The Gauchos had the block working for them and out-blocked Pacific 11-6. Bryan Berman had five blocks and setter Bart Kowalski totaled 74 assists. Tyson Norton had 12 digs. Pacific was led by Matt Cornell with 25 kills. Maor Nutkevitch finished with 19 kills and Pekka Seppanen had 18.
PATAK NAMED MPSF PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Evan Patak was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Molten Player of the Week Monday. Patak, a senior opposite hitter, played an instrumental part in UCSB opening its MPSF season with a 2-0 record. The Gauchos won two matches on the road as they defeated No. 14 Pacific, 3-2, Friday and then topped Stanford, 3-0, Saturday. In eight games, Patak totaled 55 kills, hit .438 (55-13-96), and posted nine service aces and seven blocks. In the comeback win against Pacific, Patak amassed a season-high 40 kills while adding six aces and 13 digs. In the three-game match against the Cardinal, Patak put down 15 kills. Patak currently leads the MPSF in kills (6.88 KPG) and aces (1.12 APG).
PRESTON NEARS HALF-GRAND CLUB
In his 29th season as the head coach of the UCSB men's volleyball program, Ken Preston needs just 10 more wins for 500 in his career. Currently, Preston holds an overall record of 490-352 since taking over the reigns in 1979. Preston has 18 winning seasons under his belt, including eight campaigns with 20 or more victories.
