Men's volleyball setter Bart Kowalski orchestrated a UCSB offense that defeated third-ranked UCLA and took No. 1 UC Irvine to five games in a tight loss.
In the 3-2 win over UCLA, Kowalski totaled 44 assists while adding nine digs and a block. The Gauchos out-hit the Bruins, .267 to .221 and three players tallied double-figures in kills.
In the UC Irvine match, Kowalski had 72 helpers, five digs, three blocks, and a pair of kills. UCSB hit .400 in that contest and opposite hitter Evan Patak amassed a match-high 36 kills.
Kowalski, who red-shirted the 2006 season, has 304 assists so far this season, good for a 13.84 assists per game average. In 540 set attempts, he has just one ball handling error.
