Menzel Named AVCA Player of the Week
May 3, 2011
SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. - On Monday afternoon, senior outside hitter Jeff Menzel was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men's Division I-II National Player of the Week by avca.org. It was the first time a Gaucho has been given the honor since Theo Brunner in February 2008, Menzel's freshman year.
The award came on the back of one of the best weeks of Menzel's career, as he tallied 51 kills in two playoff matches, including the MPSF Tournament final at USC, where he picked up a season-high 28 kills. The 51 kills represented Jeff's highest two-match output of the season.
In the past ten days, Jeff has twice been named ucsbgauchos.com's "Player of the Week," named MVP of the MPSF Tournament, and now the national player of the week.
"It's great that I got this award, but all I care about is winning this week," said Menzel, "I'd like it a lot more if I was named player of the week next week."
Menzel and the rest of the Gauchos face off against the USC Trojans again on Thursday night at Penn State's Rec Hall in the semifinal match of the NCAA Tournament. Should UCSB win that match, they will play in the final against the winner of the Penn State/Ohio State match.
All potential UCSB matches will be broadcast on ESPN2 and streamed live on espn3.com.
The Gaucho Fund, launched as part of the Dare to Be Great strategic plan, is UCSB Athletics' annual giving program to provide vital funding support for scholarships, academic success and leadership development for Gaucho student-athletes. The Gaucho Fund is the anchor to the Dare to Be Great campaign.
