May 26, 2010

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Two UCSB men's volleyball players, Andy McGuire and Jake Rosener, earned 2010 Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) honors for their diligence off the court as well as on it. The announcement was made Wednesday morning by the league office.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have competed in at least 50% of the team's matches, carry at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average, and must be at least a sophomore academically.

McGuire, a junior from Manhattan Beach, Calif., holds a 3.31 GPA while majoring in communication. He was UCSB's primary libero this past season, leading the squad with 322 digs and a 2.75 dig/set average. McGuire won UCSB's Golden Eagle Award for highest GPA on the team.

A senior from Cupertino, Calif., Rosener started 23 of 29 matches at the opposite position. He was fourth on the team in kills (214) and second in service aces (18). Rosener has a 3.23 GPA as a biology major.

This marks the third consecutive year McGuire and Rosener have earned All-Academic honors, as each earned the distinction in both 2008 and 2009.

Stanford led all MPSF teams with nine selections. BYU placed seven on the team, followed by USC with five. UCLA, UC San Diego, and Pepperdine all had four representatives while UC Irvine and Long Beach State each had three. Along with UCSB, Pacific and Cal State Northridge had two players represented on the All-Academic squad. Nejc Zemljak, a redshirt junior, was the University of Hawaii's lone selection.
