No. 6 Gauchos Fall to UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. – Sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (2-1) dropped a game to No. 8 UC Irvine, 13-8, on Saturday afternoon. The game was first of four that the Gauchos will play this weekend.

In the non-conference contest at Anteater Pool, UCSB got out to a 4-2 lead over UC Irvine in the first quarter. The Anteaters were able to pull even at 5-5 with a goal from Nick Pfeil with 4:48 left in the second quarter.

Scott Bishop's goal with 4:25 left before the half gave the Gauchos the lead back at 6-5, but Trent Baxter's score with 51 seconds remaining tied the game at 6-6 at the break.

The teams traded goals to start the third quarter before UCI scored six straight to go up 13-7 on Pfeil's fourth goal of the game with 1:22 left in the fourth quarter.

Eight different players scored a goal for the Gauchos and Myles Christian had eight saves in goal.

The Gauchos played a second game on Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer in the Inland Empire Tournament and won 12-7. Stats from that game will be posted as soon as they are made available.
