Wigo Captures Win No. 100, Gauchos Set New Scoring Record

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Head men's water polo coach Wolf Wigo captured his 100th win at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday as the Gauchos posted a pair of wins at the Inland Empire Classic, which was hosted by Redlands. UCSB toppled host Redlands, 20-6, before grabbing Wigo's 100th win and concurrently setting a school record for goals in a game with a 32-6 victory over Chapman.

With the pair of wins, UCSB improves to 5-1 on the season. Wigo now holds a 100-85 record as the Gaucho men's water polo coach.

The Gauchos opened action at the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday night with a victory over Pomona Pitzer. UCSB jumped out to a 3-1 start in the first quarter behind goals from freshmen Eric Van de Mortel, Chase Racich and Liam Gaughan and never trailed on its way to the 12-7 victory.

Racich, Gaughan, Nick Tomasello and Matt Gronow each scored twice against Pomona-Pitzer, while goalkeepers Jay Lovero and Myles Christian each had five saves.

On Sunday, the Gauchos were led by Gronow's four goals in their 20-6 defeat of Redlands. Derek Shoemaker, Scott Bishop, Van de Mortel, Racich and Tomasello all had two goals. Christian led the squad with three saves.

UCSB capped off the weekend with a huge offensive onslaught against Chapman. In Wigo's 100th win, 15 different Gauchos scored as UCSB posted 32 goals, which breaks the previous school record of 30 goals in a game. That record was set in a 30-8 win over St. Mary's in 1967.

Jesse Gillespie and Racich each had five goals in the record-setting victory while Gronow and Zhang each chipped in a hat trick. Christian had eight saves in goal.

The Gauchos will take on the nation's best next weekend at the Northern California Tournament in Stockton, Calif. UCSB will open the tournament against Concordia at noon on Saturday, Sept. 17.
