No. 8 Gauchos Split Matches on Day One of NorCal Tourney
STOCKTON, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara split its first two matches at the 2011 NorCal Tournament. The Gauchos defeated Concordia, 10-7, and then lost to UCLA, 13-10, in the quarterfinals.
The first game was punctuated by a five goal second quarter from the Gauchos, putting them up 8-3 at halftime. Junior Brian Shoemaker led the scoring for UCSB, scoring three times, all in the first half. Junior Jesse Gillespie and sophomore Lazar Komadinic each had two goals to help with yet another double digit scoring effort from the Gauchos.
Junior goalkeeper Myles Christian had a standout match, notching 10 saves in a complete game effort.
In the second game, the No. 8 Gauchos were outmatched early by third-ranked UCLA.
With UCSB leading 3-2 after the first quarter, UCLA surged to a 7-5 halftime lead as five different players scored in the quarter. Sophmore Matt Gronow led the charge after the break, scoring all three of the Gauchos goals in the 3rd quarter. With five goals for the game, Gronow now leads the Gauchos with 21 goals.
UCLA continued to keep the pressure on in the second half, not allowing the Gauchos an opportunity to rally for a late victory. Josh Samuels led the Bruins with three goals, with eight other players scoring at least once.
UC Santa Barbara will play Pepperdine tomorrow at the University of the Pacific at 9:20 a.m. The Gauchos will play again at 1:20 or 2:40 p.m., against either UC Irvine or Pacific, depending on the outcome of the early game.
