This Week in Water Polo
After going 2-2 last weekend at the NorCal Tournament in Stockton, Calif., UC Santa Barbara will be looking to have a strong showing at home. The Gauchos will face No. 14 Concordia, which UCSB defeated, 10-7, in pool play at the NorCal Tournament, at 12 p.m. in Campus Pool. Junior Brian Shoemaker had three goals for UCSB the last time these two teams met. The 3 p.m. game features the Gauchos against Pomona-Pitzer. UCSB is 2-0 against Pomona on the season, both times scoring in double digits.
UCSB defeated No. 8 UC Irvine, 11-5, to conclude last weekend's tournament, finishing in seventh place. The Gauchos' 15.2 goals per game average leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
UCSB moved up one spot to No. 7 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 poll, largely due to their crushing victory of then No. 6 UC Irvine.
Strength in Numbers
Sophomore Matt Gronow is fifth in the conference with 24 goals and eighth in goals per game with 2.40. Gronow led the Gauchos with nine goals over the weekend in Stockton. Brian Shoemaker returned from injury to score four goals, equaling his brother, Derek, who also scored four times.
Junior goalkeeper Myles Christian is having a standout year with 60 total saves, second best in the MPSF. His 9.6 saves per game are fourth best in the conference.
