After a 1-1 homestand, the No. 8 ranked Gauchos will look to have a strong showing in Long Beach this weekend. They open pool play against UC San Diego this Saturday. UCSB will have to watch out for Triton senior Graham Saber, who leads the team with 33 goals.
If UCSB wins, it will play the winner of the UCLA vs. Air Force game at 3:10 p.m. for a spot in the semifinals. UCLA is currently ranked No. 2 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Poll. The Gauchos lost to UCLA in the quarterfinals of the NorCal Tournament, 13-10, on September 17.
UCSB leads the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in total goals with 163. Against Concordia and Pomona-Pitzer, the Gauchos were held to under 10 goals for just the third and fourth times this season. Sophomore Matt Gronow continues to lead the team in total goals with 26 and is tied with junior Jesse Gillespie for the most assists with eight.
Junior Myles Christian continues his dominance in goal with 73 saves, second best in the MPSF. He is third in the conference with 11.68 saves per game.
UCSB finished in fourth place at the 2010 SoCal Tournament. The Gauchos defeated Concordia and Stanford on the first day of the tournament to make it to the semifinals against USC. UCSB narrowly lost to the No. 1 ranked Trojans, 7-6, before losing to UC Irvine in the third place game, 8-4.
With plenty of firepower, this year's team looks to improve upon last year's finish and solidify itself as a powerhouse in the loaded Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
