The Upcoming Weekend
The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team (9-2) will be at home this weekend hosting the annual Southern California Tournament. The first game for the Gauchos will be against No. 11 UC San Diego (5-3), which they defeated earlier in the season by the score of 18-10 in a non-conference match. If the Gauchos prevail over UC San Diego, they will then play the winner of the No. 3 Stanford vs. No. 15 Princeton match in their second game on Saturday. If UCSB loses against the Tritons, they will play the loser of the same match.
Last Weekend's Match-Up
Sunday, Sept. 23, the Gauchos downed No. 20 Concordia, 15-6, in a neutral site game held at the USC McDonald's Swim Stadium. Junior Matt Gronow
led all scoring with four goals and senior goalkeeper, Myles Christian
led the team with six saves. With this victory, the Gauchos improved their overall record to 9-2.
In last year's Southern California Tournament, the Gauchos finished fifth. Defeating UC San Diego in its first match, UCSB fell to UCLA in its second match, 12-5. UCSB then defeated Pacific in a thrilling triple overtime game and finished the tournament with a win over UC Irvine 9-6 in the fifth-place game. In last year's tourney, Brian Shoemaker
led all Gauchos in scoring with a total of eight goals.
In the Southern California Tournament, there are sixteen men's water polo teams, all grouped into four brackets. In bracket A, the teams are No. 1 USC, No. 8 Pacific, No. 9 Long Beach State and No. 19 St. Francis. Bracket B includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 7 Pepperdine, No. 10 Loyola Marymount and No. 16 Santa Clara. The teams in bracket C are No. 3 Stanford, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara, No. 11 UC San Diego and No. 15 Princeton. Rounding out the tournament is bracket D which consists of No. 4 Cal, No. 5 UC Irvine, No. 12 UC Davis and No. 14 Air Force.
Catch Up with Team Leaders
Entering the Southern California Tournament, the Gauchos are displaying fine statistics within the MPSF rankings. Junior Matt Gronow leads the Gauchos with 28 goals placing him 11th
in the league. Not far behind is fellow junior, Evan Dellinger
with 23 goals ranking him 13th
. Senior goalkeeper, Myles Christian is ranked third among the goalies with an astonishing 10.67 saves per game. As a team, UCSB is ranked as the second best offensive team with an average of 14.91 goals per game.
Home Sweet Home
Once the Southern California Tournament concludes, UCSB will continue home action next Sunday, Oct. 7, when it hosts a double header, first playing Iona at 9 am and then competing against Harvard at noon. Both matches are non-conference games and will be held at the Campus Pool.
