  • From One Invitational to Another
No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (2-0, 0-0) saw its first action of the 2013 season last week as it competed in the UCLA Invitational. The Gauchos are off to a strong start as the team handily defeated La Verne, 20-3, followed by a 17-7 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.

Now in the second week of the new season, Santa Barbara will travel to Redlands, Calif. to participate in this year's Inland Empire Invite. The Gauchos will have a trio of regular season games at the invitational with all of the games on Saturday, Sep. 14. During the one day invite, UCSB will start its day against Whittier (2-1) at 10:15 a.m., followed by a contest against Redlands (1-3) at 12:45 p.m. with the concluding match against Claremont McKenna (0-2) at 3:15 p.m.
  • Early Impressions
Juniors, Derek Shoemaker, Bryce Miller and Eric Van de Mortel are off to hot starts as the trio showcased their offensive talents. In two games Shoemaker leads the team with a total of nine goals while Miller and Van de Mortel have made seven and six, respectively. The huge crop of freshmen got their share of goals during last weekend's fixtures with freshman attacker Alden Geller leading the group with two scores.
  • Position to Keep Eyes On: Goalkeeper
Sophomore Chris Whitelegge is in prime position to fill the void in goal left by last year's starter Myles Christian who graduated this past spring. In last week's two matches, Whitelegge recorded a solid 17 saves; holding La Verne to only three goals in the entire match.

Besides Whitelegge, freshman keeper Kyle Garwick saw some playing time during last week's UCLA Invitational. In his lone appearance, Garwick recorded five saves. Both Garwick and Whitelegge will continue to look for their opportunities and improve in goal as the season progresses.
  • Up Next on the Schedule
After this weekend's invitational, UCSB will prepare for the competitive Nor Cal Tournament which is being hosted in Berkeley this year on Saturday and Sunday, Sep. 21-22. The first game for the Gauchos will be on Saturday, Sep. 21 at 9:25 a.m. against No. 10 UC San Diego.
