UCSB Falls Short to No. 1 USC

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo fell to No. 1 USC 16-10. Junior Eric Van de Mortel and sophomore Kevin Cappon scored four goals each to lead the Gauchos on the offensive end of the pool.

The Trojans opened the game with three consecutive goals to take the lead 3-0 with five minutes left in the first period. Kevin Cappon tallied the first goal of the game for the Gauchos shortly after. USC was able to get another goal in before Kevin Cappon scored another goal for UCSB. Senior Matt Gronow recorded two consecutive goals to bring the Gauchos within one. The Trojans scored another goal to end the first quarter up 6-4. 

USC began the second period with a quick goal. Kevin Cappon tallied his third goal of the game to help the Gauchos. Eric Van de Mortel scored his first goal to once again bring UCSB within one. USC was able to record two goals while Eric Van de Mortel scored another goal, ending the second quarter with a tight Trojan lead 9-7. 

The third quarter started with two goals from the Trojans. Eric Van de Mortel scored his third goal of the game before USC recorded another to end the third quarter 12-8.

In the fourth, Eric Van de Mortel and Kevin Cappon scored a goal each to help UCSB on the offensive end. The Trojans were able to record four goals, leading to their 16-10 win over the Gauchos.

UCSB is now 15-6 overall and 2-2 in the MPSF Conference. The Gauchos continue their 2013-2014 season as they take on No. 8 UC Irvine at home on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 12 p.m. UCSB will then travel to Palo Alto to play No. 4 Stanford at 12 p.m on Sunday, Nov. 3.
