No. 6 Gauchos Fall Just Short at Stanford

Palo Alto, Calif. After defeating No. 8 UC Irvine in yesterday's contest, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (16-7, 3-3) traveled up to Palo Alto, Calif. to take on No. 4 Stanford (14-4, 3-1). UCSB fell just short in today's MPSF conference match as the Cardinals escaped with an 11-8 victory.

Falling to an early 1-0 deficit, Santa Barbara fired back with two unanswered goals from junior standouts, Derek Shoemaker and Eric Van de Mortel. The match remained tight as the teams ended the first period with two goals apiece.

The Cardinals really stepped up its play in the second period; scoring a large total of six goals in the period. In a four minute stretch, Stanford scored three unanswered goals that increased its lead to 6-3. The Gauchos were unable to keep up within the period as the team only tallied two more goals by the end of the first half.

Facing an 8-4 deficit, UCSB had to dig deep and show its resilience in order to keep the game close. The Gauchos did just that, outscoring the Cardinals in the third period with goals from Kevin Cappon and Eric Van de Mortel.

The Gauchos were able to cut the deficit to two goals from a 4:25 goal by sophomore Matthew Hamilton. Despite the late surge, UCSB was unable to complete the comeback as the team lost a close game by the final score of 11-8.

The season is winding down for UCSB as the team will have its Senior Day on its final home match of the season next Sunday. The Gauchos will host the MPSF conference leaders, University of Pacific next Sunday, Nov. 10 at noon at Campus Pool.
