Gauchos Conclude Season with Win over No. 8 UC Irvine, Claim Seventh Place

STOCKTON, Calif. After losing its first two matches of the MPSF Championship, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (17-10) rebounded with a 13-8 victory over No. 8 UC Irvine (13-15).

Headlined by five goals from senior, Bryce Miller, and thirteen saves from goalkeeper, Jay Lovero, Santa Barbara concluded its 2013 season on a high note.

The first period was a show from the seniors for UCSB as Bryce Miller and Matt Gronow each  produced two goals apiece to supplant a 4-1 lead after the first period.

UC Irvine played well in the second period, scoring an early 7:20 goal from Mitch Wise. The Gauchos could not find an answer to the Anteaters as the team was held scoreless in the period. With a 2:20 goal, Irvine was able to go into halftime with only a one goal deficit.

The Anteaters tied the game 4-4 early on in the third period with another early goal from Mitch Wise. UCSB claimed the lead once again with a 6-on-5 goal, but the Anteaters answered right back with a goal of their own. This was an ongoing theme in the third period as the two teams were able to answer the opposing team's goals. With three goals from Miller and a goal from Kevin Cappon, the Gauchos were able to claim the slim 8-7 lead heading into the final period.

The final act of the game is where UCSB took control and ran away with the victory. Scoring five goals in the period, the Gauchos executed offensively and defeated the Anteaters. Scoring two goals apiece in the period were Derek Shoemaker and Matthew Hamilton, while Gronow tallied one more goal to complete his hat-trick.

Dropping the first two contests of the championship, the Gauchos got back on the right track, ending the season with the team's seventeenth victory of the 2013 campaign.
