No. 10 Gauchos Face Defeat at No. 12 Irvine, 9-6

IRVINE, Calif.-- Tenth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (9-13, 0-8 MPSF) suffered its ninth straight loss of the season as the team could not prevail against No. 12 UC Irvine (15-11, 2-6 MPSF). On the road at Anteater Aquatics Complex, Santa Barbara could not secure its lone conference victory of the 2014 season.

The day's action got off to a rough start for the Gauchos as Irvine got on the board twice within the first three minutes of the opening period. UCSB turned things around with two power play goals from juniors, Kevin Cappon and Samer Alkateb. Nearing the end of the period, Irvine recaptured a 3-2 lead with a :56 second strike from Matt Skinner.

Cashing in on a 7:20 score, the home team stretched its lead to two goals. UCSB junior Chase Racich answered back with a 5:45 goal to make the score, 4-3, in favor of Irvine. The rest of the period remained a stalemate as neither team could find the back of the net.

Trailing by a single score, the Gauchos could not convert its early possessions of the third frame. Irvine's Jared Osborn scored his only goal of the day with a 5:08 strike. UCSB gained momentum in the final two minutes of the third quarter as junior attacker Bryan Snyder captured back-to-back goals to tie the game, 5-5. The Anteaters answered the call as freshman Ryan Warde scored with ten seconds remaining to put the Anteaters back on top, 6-5.

Facing an early 6-on-5 opportunity, Irvine capitalized at the 7:19 mark to pull ahead, 7-5. Junior Cameron Yates got on the scoreboard with a 3:55 two meter goal. Losing 7-6 with nearly four minutes left in regulation, the Gauchos could not capture another goal in regulation. The Anteaters scored two more goals to pull away from UCSB and ultimately come out on top, 9-6.

Snyder has had the hot hand of late; scoring five goals in the past two matches. The junior attacker now has 24 goals for the season. Defensively, junior goalkeeper Chris Whitelegge had a relatively quiet day with only six recorded saves.

The Gauchos will now play in the MPSF Play-In-Game next Friday, Nov. 21 at 8:30 a.m. If the Gauchos prevail in the wild card match, the team will officially compete in the MPSF Championships as the eighth and final seed.
