The Gauchos played an exciting match resulting in an overtime victory this Saturday against UC San Diego!
With Derek Shoemaker scoring four goals and hat-tricks from both Liam Gaughan and Reed Cotterill, the Gauchos were a force to be reckoned with this Saturday night in San Diego. UCSB beat UCSD 16-14 in overtime.
Just a minute into the game, Liam Gaughan scored the first goal. UCSD quickly responded to his score 20 seconds later with back-to-back goals, bringing the count to 2-1. The Tritons scored again a minute and a half later off of an exclusion resulting in a 6-on-5. Boris Jovanovic found the back of the net twice after the Tritons scored one final goal of the quarter, making the score 4-3 leading into the second quarter.
UCSD allowed three unanswered goals in the first half of the second quarter before UCSB retaliated with three goals from Max Schaum, Mitch Hamilton, and Nick Jordan. The score heading into halftime was 7-6, with Santa Barbara in the lead.
The Tritons scored two goals in the first minute of the quarter, putting them in the lead by one point at 7-8. However, 20 seconds later, Gaughan scored another Gaucho goal kicking off a three point scoring streak. UCSD finally responded with two more goals of their own, tying up the game at 10-10.
The fourth quarter was a slow one with each team only scoring two goals each. However, with the teams being tied at 12 points each at the end of regulation, the game was sent into overtime.
UCSB was on fire during overtime! With another goal from Gaughan and Derek Shoemaker and Reed Cotterill both contributing two goals a piece, the Gauchos would win the game 16-14.
Senior Chris Whitelegge tallied nine saves in this game.
The Gauchos will take on Pepperdine on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 12 p.m. in Malibu, Calif.
