No. 6 UCSB Defeated by No. 3 UC Berkeley

This Friday, the Gauchos took on the Cal Golden Bears at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Despite several attempts to score by the Gauchos and even more saves from Chris Whitelegge, UCSB would suffer a 4-11 loss.

The game got off to a slow start with not a single goal scored in the first 6 minutes of the quarter. Unfortunately the first goal of the game was scored by #7 from Cal's team, making the score 1-0 with the Bears in the lead. Cal would score one more goal of the quarter at the 1:02 mark.

Following another Berkeley goal at the beginning of the second quarter, Derek Shoemaker made the first score of the game for the Gauchos. However, this would be the only score of the half for UCSB and about 30 seconds later, the Bears went on a 3-0 scoring streak. The score heading into halftime was 6-1, Bears.

Cal started the second half with two more goals, boosting their score to 8 goals to the Gauchos' 1. In the last minute of the third quarter, Shoemaker found the back of the net for the second time. In the final quarter, Berkeley responded with three more goals. Goals from Shoemaker and Shane Hauschild would end the match with the Gauchos losing the game 11-4.

Chris Whitelegge tallied eleven saves against Cal.

The Gauchos will take on UC Irvine tomorrow at 12p.m.
