Gauchos Late Rally not enough versus No. 5 Pacific on Senior Night

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. – The No. 10 UCSB Men's Water Polo team dropped their final regular season home game of the season to No. 5 Pacific 14-7 on Friday night at Campus Pool. Several seniors contributed strong performances, led by Shane Hauschild's hat trick, but after a slow start, UCSB's rally was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Prior to the match, six Gaucho seniors in Josh Jordan, Shane Hauschild, Reed Cotterill, Max Schaum, Jamie Taylor, and Mitch Young were honored as they prepared to play their last home game at Campus Pool. All were commended and thanked for their contributions to the program over the course of the last four years.

The Tigers scored two goals to open the game with a 2-0 lead. Senior co-captain Shane Hauschild answered with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter to open the scoring for the Gauchos and cut the deficit to 2-1. With three seconds remaining in the first period, Pacific capitalized on a power play that almost guaranteed Pacific a two point advantage going into the second. However, on the ensuing play, Shane Hauschild found the net on a half-court skip shot, pumping his fists in celebration as the Gauchos entered the second with some positive momentum.

The momentum carried over initially, as Brannan Haket tied the game with a counterattack goal. That would be the only UCSB goal in the quarter, as Pacific answered with a 5-0 run to put the Tigers up 8-3 at the break.

UCSB's offense got rolling in the third quarter, to keep the game close, with Tommy Fellner and senior Max Schaum scoring consecutive goals to open the quarter. Shane Hauschild scored his third goal of the game in the quarter as well, but the Gauchos still trailed by five entering the final period.

The Gauchos fought hard in the final quarter, but Pacific played conservatively to limit the Gauchos' scoring opportunities. Chad Nelson scored his lone goal of the game on an outside shot that found the upper right corner of the cage. That would be the only score of the quarter for the Gauchos, as they fell to Pacific to a final score of 14-7.

Hauschild led all Gauchos with three goals, while Fellner, Haket, Schaum and Nelson all contributed one apiece. Barrios was solid in cage with seven saves.

No. 10 UCSB looks to end conference play on a high note at No. 8 Pepperdine in the final game of GCC play.
