DAVIS, Calif. – No. 7 UC Santa Barbara capped off the Aggie Roundup on Sunday by downing Chapman 23-3 for its third straight win to close out the weekend. Three Gauchos finished with a hat trick, led by a season-high five goals from freshman driver Nathan Puentes.
Junior Ivan Gvozdanovic and senior Boris Jovanovic finished with three goals apiece. Jovanovic ended the weekend with 12 goals, giving him a team-leading 38 for the year. Also nabbing two goals were Jesse Morrison, Ivan Gvozdanovic, Chad Nelson and Tommy Hawkins.
The 20-goal difference was the second-largest of the season for the Gauchos, and 11 more than the last time the two team's faced in a 14-5 UCSB win on Sept. 8. UCSB will head into this Thursday's matchup with No. 10 Pepperdine riding its third three-game winning streak already this season.
The Gauchos took the lead less than 27 seconds in courtesy of a goal from freshman Sam Nangle. The final two minutes of the opening period provided goals from Leo Yuno, Puentes and Morrison, the latter coming on a power play, to give UCSB a 6-1 lead.
The second quarter would be the most lopsided of the day, as the Gauchos shut out Chapman while pouring in seven more scores. Mason McQuet and Spencer Wood found the scoresheet in the final 70 seconds of the half to give their side a 13-1 advantage at the break.
UCSB refused to slow down to open the second half, posting six more goals led by a third quarter brace from Jovanovic. Brosnan's third goal of the day with four seconds left sent the Gaucho into the final frame leading 19-2.
Puentes would become the second Gaucho on the day with multiple goals in the same quarter, putting up two more in the fourth. Hawkins scored on a power play midway through the period and Jovanovic finished off the day with his third goal, setting the final score at 23-3.
This week, the Gauchos will play their final three games before the start of non-conference play. They will be on the road Thursday at Pepperdine (7:00 pm) before hosting No. 4 Stanford on Saturday (12:00 pm). On Sunday, UCSB travels to No. 1 USC to face the Trojans at 1:00 p.m. for the second time in eight days.
