LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In a rematch with the No. 1 team in the country on Sunday, No. 5 UC Santa Barbara fell behind early at USC en route to a 16-2 defeat.
Juniors Jacob Halle and Tommy Fellner both found the scoresheet for the visitors, who were handed their second loss by the Trojans over the last 15 days. It was the 10th goal of the season for both Gauchos.
The loss was just the fifth of the season for UCSB (12-5), which begins Golden Coast Conference play against No. 17 San Jose State this Friday in Santa Barbara. USC meanwhile improved to a flawless 17-0 mark for the year.
Following a pair of unanswered Trojan goals to open the game, Halle provided some early UCSB resistance, scoring his goal at the 4:34 mark of the opening period.
The Trojans would go on to take a 5-1 lead into the second quarter, embarking on what would end up being a 12-0 scoring run. Fellner would put away his lone scoring chance at the 2:49 mark of the third.
Despite the result, the Gauchos enter their conference schedule winners in four of their last six outings, going 2-2 against ranked opponents over that span. Their upcoming match with the Spartans this Friday is set to begin on Oct. 5 at 4:00 p.m. at Campus Pool.
