LA JOLLA, Calif. - The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara (4-0) men's water polo team recorded its first upset of the early season as it took down No. 6 Pepperdine (3-1) in the championship game of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational with a somewhat appropriate final score of 7-6 Sunday afternoon at UCSD's Canyonview Aquatics Complex. The Gauchos defeated host No. 8 UCSD (2-2) 10-8 earlier in the day to advance to the tournament's first place game.
Junior Miles Price led the Gauchos in the win over Pepperdine with four goals in the championship match.
Ross Sinclair posted the first goal of the championship game with a shot scored at 4:38. The Gaucho lead extended to two points with Zsombor Vincze's second goal of the day scored with three minutes to play in the first quarter. Pepperdine cut the UCSB lead back to one goal as Clayton Snyder scored his first of two goals with 30 seconds left on the clock.
Snyder tied the game up at 2-2 a little over two minutes into the second quarter, but UCSB regained the lead quickly with the first of Price's four goals. Matt MacDonnell tied the game once again with 1:48 left to play in the first half. Not willing to stay tied into halftime, Price fired one in giving UCSB a 4-2 advantage leading into halftime.
The game saw two more ties in the third frame, but UCSB once again had the last word via Price's third goal scored with 34 seconds on the clock in the third quarter. Twenty seconds into the fourth, JP MacDonell tied things up at 6-6. Just over a minute later, UCSB capitalized on a six-on-five timeout play with Price scoring the eventual gamewinner. The Waves were unable to take advantage of two UCSB ejections late in the game and when the final buzzer sounded, the Gauchos had the 7-6 victory.
In the first game of the day versus host No. 8 UC San Diego, Matt Dale opened with a six-on-five goal less than two minutes into play. A couple of minutes later Price tallied another Gaucho goal to give UCSB a narrow 2-0 lead. The Tritons' Daniel Garcia hit the back of the cage with 27 seconds left on the clock to cut the UCSB lead to just one point heading into the second quarter.
Santa Barbara steadily distanced itself from UCSD in the second frame with a goal from Vincze and a pair of points from Sean Castillo. The Tritons got one by the Gaucho defense with 1:13 left in the first half to head into halftime trailing, 5-2.
UCSB duplicated its second quarter output with another trio of goals in the third: back-to-back points from Dale and one from Dane Lindstrom. UC San Diego's Garcia and Peter Gresham each chipped in a goal, but the Triton's trailed 8-4 heading into the final frame.
UCSD outscored UCSB 4-2 in the final quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Gaucho lead as UCSB took the 10-8 win and its place in the tournament's championship game.
The Gauchos will remain on the road next week as they head to the Inland Empire Classic being hosted by Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and LaVerne. UCSB will once again face-off with Pepperdine next weekend in its tournament opener on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10:20 a.m. at the University of LaVerne.
