BERKELEY, Calif. - The seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team extended its winning streak to six matches in a row with a 10-4 victory over 11th-ranked Loyola Marymount in its first match of the 2007 NorCal Open on Saturday morning.
The Gauchos improved to 10-1 on the season by claiming a 5-2 lead at halftime and then expanding the edge to 10-4 by the final buzzer.
UCSB was led by Milos Golic, a freshman from Belgrade, Serbia, who scored four goals in the match. Golic made his Gaucho debut on Friday when he scored one goal in a win at UC Davis. Senior Matt Dale tallied three goals, while freshman Brian Bishop, sophomore Kendall Olds and sophomore Stefan Partelow each scored one.
The goalkeeping choirs were handled by senior Rick Wright who had seven saves and allowed three goals in three quarters, and freshman Fraser Bunn, who had a pair of saves and gave-up one goal in his one quarter of action.
The victory over the Lions not only improved UCSB's winning streak to six matches in a row, but it gave the team a 10-1 overall record, their best start in several years.
The Gauchos will play No. 2 Cal in the second round on Saturday afternoon.
