UCSB Drops Two Matches on First Day of Southern California Water Polo Tournament

IRVINE, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara lost matches to Stanford and Navy on the first day of the Southern California Water Polo Tournament. The Gauchos opened play with an 11-5 loss to Stanford and then in the afternoon, they dropped a 6-4 decision to Navy.

In the early match against Stanford, UCSB fell behind 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, but the Gauchos scored three goals in the second stanza and trailed just 5-3 at the half. The Cardinal, however, outscored the Gauchos 6-2 in the second half to put the match away. UCSB was paced by senior driver Ramiro Saldain who scored a pair of goals and sophomore goalkeeper James Street who recorded nine saves. Stanford was led by senior Thomas Hopkins who tallied five goals.

In their second match of the day, the Gauchos and Navy were tied at half, 3-3. UCSB scored the only goal of the third quarter and took a 4-3 lead into the final period. Navy, however, scored three goals and blanked the Gaucho attack in the final quarter to post a 6-4 victory. Sophomore Robbie Bauer had three of UCSB's four goals in the match and Bret DeMuth added the fourth score.

The tourney opener against Stanford marked the first time that UCSB's first-year head coach Wolf Wigo faced his alma mater. Wigo, a three-time All-American at Stanford in the mid-90s, led the Cardinal to a pair of NCAA Championships.

Santa Barbara is now 5-5 on the season. The Gauchos will play Bucknell on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. The match against the Bison will be played at Corona del Mar High School.
