No. 10 UCSB Splits a Pair on the Opening Day of the NorCal Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 10 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team split its first two games at the NorCal Tournament being hosted by Pacific this weekend. The Gauchos dropped their first round game to No. 7 UC Irvine, 10-9, on Saturday morning before defeating No. 20 Air Force in sudden death overtime by the same score later in the afternoon at St. Mary's High School.
With the split, the Gaucho season record now stands at 5-3 overall.
UC Irvine opened the first game of the day by outscoring UCSB 2-1 in the first quarter. The Gauchos came roaring back in the second, outscoring the Anteaters 5-2 to carry a 6-4 advantage into halftime.
The teams each posted a pair of goals in the third quarter before Irvine finished strong with a four-goal fourth quarter, taking the 10-9 victory.
In the second game of the day, UCSB jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Air Force in the first quarter. The Falcons climbed back into the game and trailed 4-2 at the end of the first half. Air Force outscored UCSB 3-2 in the third quarter and then tied the game up in the fourth at 7-7.
Heading into the second overtime period, the Falcons had a one-goal advantage at 9-8, but the Gauchos fought back and forced a sudden death period. Junior two-meter player Jesse Tootell scored the gamewinner with 15 seconds left in the first sudden death period to give the Gauchos the 10-9 victory.
Golic posted three goals in the win over Air Force extending his scoring streak to 13 consecutive games, 12 of which have been multiple goal games. Price brought his daily total to six goals with two against the Falcons while goalie Fraser Bunn tallied eight saves.
UCSB will close out the NorCal Tournament on Sunday with a pair of games. The first contest of the day will be at noon against an opponent that has yet to be determined at Saint Mary's High School.
