MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 8 UC Santa Barbara water polo team defeated No. 10 Loyola Marymount, 10-7 on Saturday afternoon at the Pepperdine Mini Tournament. Freshman Brian Bishop led UCSB with two goals in the win while eight other Gauchos also each chipped in one goal.
With the win, UCSB snapped its five-game losing skid and improved to 11-6 on the season while the Lions fall to 5-7 on the year.
The Gauchos jumped out to a narrow 3-2 lead in the first quarter and held a 5-4 lead heading into halftime. The Lions outscored UCSB 3-2 to tie the game at 7-7 with one quarter left to play. Santa Barbara shut down LMU in the final frame while posting three goals to take the 10-7 win.
Rick Wright had six saves for UCSB. LMU's Tim Hummel was the leading scorer for the game with a hat trick.
The Gauchos will host their home and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Sunday with a game against No. 6 UC Irvine at Campus Pool at noon.
