No. 9 UCSB Posts 10-6 Victory Over No. 11 UC Irvine

Sept. 30, 2006

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The No. 9 ranked UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team captured its first win at home this season with a 10-6 victory over No. 11 UC Irvine Saturday afternoon at Campus Pool. Freshman Zsombor Vincze led the Gauchos with his second hat trick of the season.

With the win, the Gaucho's season record is lifted to 11-4 while UC Irvine drops to 4-7 overall. Despite being Mountain Pacific Conference foes, Saturday's game did not count towards either team's conference record.

UC Irvine won the opening sprint at the beginning of the first quarter, but it was the Gauchos that struck first as Vincze had a breakaway that he converted into the first UCSB goal with 6:14 on the clock. Less than a minute later, Kendell Olds found the back of the Anteater net with an outside shot to increase the UCSB lead to 2-0. Several minutes passed before Stefan Partelow found himself wide open on the left post of the UC Irvine goal, Partelow walked the ball in and posted the third straight Gaucho goal with 1:56 left in the first.

UC Irvine fought back as they posted two back-to-back goals provided by Colin Mello and Jamie Frank respectively. At the end of the first quarter, the Gaucho lead had been reduced to 3-2.

Three minutes into the second quarter, UCSB found itself up on a six-on-five power play, which was converted into a Gaucho goal by Coulson Lantz. UC Irvine answered with a lob shot by Mello to once again bring the Anteaters within one-point at 4-3. With 1:36 left to play in the first half, Vincze once again found himself open on a counter-attack and took a shot that deflected off of the UC Irvine goalie's arm and into the cage to put the score at 5-3 leading into halftime.

The Gauchos earned an ejection a little over a minute into the third quarter and Miles Price was able to capitalize adding another goal to UCSB's side of the scoreboard. Irvine's Mello reacted with his third goal of the game during a man-up power play to bring the score to 6-4. Two straight skip-shot goals from Travis Watts and Tamas Donauer ensued before UC Irvine earned a five-meter penalty shot. Mello shot and scored to put the score at 8-5. With 1:44 left on the clock, Frank added his second goal of the game.

With the score at 8-6 heading into the final quarter, each team struggled to produce any offense in the first several minutes. Ross Sinclair broke through the temporary scoring drought as he fired a shot from outside that hit the post before landing in the back of the Anteater net. Vincze found the back of the cage for the third time with 1:45 left to play to seal the Gaucho win at 10-6. This was UCSB's second win over UC Irvine this season, the first coming in an 8-7 overtime victory at the season opening UC San Diego Triton Invitational.

UC Santa Barbara will continue action this weekend as they travel to Malibu on Sunday for a noon match-up with No. 13 Pepperdine. Like today's game, the match between the two MPSF teams will not count towards either's conference record.
