SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The third time proved to be the charm for No. 10 Loyola Marymount as it defeated No. 7 UC Santa Barbara 5-4 in the opening game of the Southern California Tournament, which marked the Lions' third contest against the Gauchos this season. UCSB rebounded and defeated Redlands 19-2 in its second game on Saturday at Corona del Mar High School.
With the split, UCSB now stands at 13-8 on the season. The Gauchos had beaten the Lions twice earlier this season with a 10-4 win in the opening game of the Northern California Open and a 10-7 win on Sept. 29. The loss marked the Gauchos' sixth one-goal loss of the season, all of which have come against teams ranked in the top-10.
UCSB opened up the game against Loyola Marymount with a six-on-five goal less than a minute into play by Zsombor Vincze to jump out to a 1-0 lead. With 4:35 on the clock, Tibor Forai scored the first of his three goals to tie the game at 1-1. Forai scored exactly two minutes later to give LMU a narrow 2-1 lead after one quarter.
Ross Sinclair tied the game at 2-2 with a six-on-five goal to open the second quarter. LMU responded with a pair of unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead heading into halftime.
The Gauchos held their opponents scoreless in the third frame, with senior goalie Rick Wright posting six saves and Matt Dale notching a goal to cut the LMU lead to 4-3 heading into the final quarter. With 1:50 left in the fourth, Tim Hummell tallied what would be the eventual gamewinner giving Loyola Marymount a 5-3 advantage. Vincze cut the LMU lead back to just one goal 39 seconds later. UCSB drew an ejection with 12 second left in the game, but the Gauchos were unable to convert the man-up opportunity, falling 5-4 to the Lions.
The second game of the day paired UCSB with Redlands for the second time this season. UCSB was able to jump out to a 7-0 advantage before Redlands' Andrew Becskehazy put the Bulldogs on the board with 1:37 left in the first half.
Action at the 2007 Southern California Tournament continues on Sunday at Corona del Mar High School where the Gauchos will face either No. 14 Pacific or No. 15 Bucknell in a 10:40 a.m. match-up.
