Oct. 15, 2005

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 15 Gauchos (7-10, 0-1) dropped both matches of the day at the Northern California Water Polo Tournament by falling to top-ranked UCLA 8-3 and UC Davis 6-5 on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.

In the first match of the day, UCSB faced off against the Bruins and found itself in an early hole. UCLA outscored the Gauchos 4-1 in the first quarter and upped its lead to 5-2 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Bruins laid on the defense by shutting out the Gauchos, while scoring two goals for themselves. Entering the fourth quarter the score read 7-2 in favor of the top-ranked squad. Both teams exchanged notches in the fourth, and UCLA went on to defeat UCSB by a count of 8-3. Sophomore Robbie Bauer, freshman Danny Natalizio, and senior Ramiro Saldain each netted a goal for the Gauchos. Sophomore goalkeeper Rick Wright tallied seven saves between the pipes for UCSB.

UCSB battled UC Davis in the second match of the day. This time it was UCSB who would jump out to the early lead by scoring the only goal of the first quarter. The second quarter proved different for the Gauchos when Davis posted three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 halftime lead. The two teams exchanged goals in the third quarter, so the Aggies took a two goal advantage into the final quarter. UCSB did manage to tally three goals in the final period, but it also gave up two and the Gauchos were edged 6-5. Miles Price found the back of the net twice in the match, while Natalizio, Coulson Lantz, and Saldain each tallied one goal. The goal was the second for Natalizio and Saldain on the tournament. Wright posted 12 saves in goal for the Gauchos.

UCSB will continue tournament action tomorrow when it takes on UC Santa Cruz at 8 a.m. in Miramonte High School's Bill Brown Aquatics Center.
