No. 15 UCSB Sweeps Final Day of NorCal Tournament

The No. 15 Gauchos (9-10, 0-1) finished strong at the Northern California Water Polo Tournament by knocking off UC Santa Cruz 10-4 and Santa Clara 9-7 on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif.
In the first match of the day, UCSB faced off against UC Santa Cruz. The Gauchos took an early lead by scoring two opening quarter goals while holding the Banana Slugs to one goal on the period. UCSB kept momentum headed into halftime by tallying four goals in the second quarter. The Gauchos held a commanding 6-2 lead at the break. The second half proved very similar for UCSB when it posted two goals while holding Santa Cruz to only one score in each of the second-half periods. As the clock ran out, the scoreboard read 10-4 in favor of the Gauchos. Sophomore Matt Tilburg led all scorers with three goals on the match. Freshman Travis Watts found the back of the net twice during the match for the Gauchos. In addition, Robbie Bauer, Tyler Powell, Ramiro Saldain, Miles Price, and Michael Dixon each contributed one goal for UCSB. Goalkeeper Rick Wright tallied eight saves in goal for the Gauchos.
UCSB battled Santa Clara in its final match of the day. The Gauchos managed to carry momentum from the victory over UC Santa Cruz into the first quarter of the Santa Clara match. UCSB posted three goals in the opening period while shutting out their opponent. In the second quarter, Santa Clara was the team to notch three scores while UCSB managed to tally two of its own to take a 5-3 lead into the break. The third quarter mimicked the second with Santa Clara posting three goals to UCSB's two. UCSB held a one-goal advantage headed into the final quarter, but the Gaucho offense wasn't done yet. UCSB sealed the 9-7 victory after netting two fourth-quarter goals and giving up only one in return. After scoring in the previous two matches, Price posted two more goals for the Gauchos. In addition, freshmen Dane Lindstrom and Chris Lantz each tallied two goals for UCSB, while sophomore Coulson Lantz and Powell contributed one. Saldain was the only Gaucho to score a goal in each of the four matches at the NorCal Tournament. Goalkeepers Wright and James Street had three and two saves, respectively.
UCSB will return to action this Saturday when it pays a visit to Los Angeles to take on top-ranked UCLA at 1:00 p.m.
