SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - On a misty Sunday afternoon No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (9-5, 0-1) fell to No. 4 Stanford (8-5, 2-1), 8-6 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at Campus Pool.
The Gauchos took the early lead in the game with a goal from Golic less than four minutes into the game. However, this was the only time UCSB would lead. Stanford retaliated with back-to-back goals and went up 2-1 no more than 30 seconds later.
The Gauchos tied the game at two with a goal from Baliani, but couldn't hold off the Cardinal attack. Stanford scored four goals total in the first period and posted another in the second. The Gauchos couldn't manage a goal in the second quarter, making the score 5-2 at halftime.
Stanford then added to the lead with a 6-on-5 goal in the third making the score 6-2. The four goal run by Stanford seemed to be a momentum killer for the Gauchos, but they continued to play strong defense and fight hard.
Stanford earned three penalty shots and converted on all of them, but UCSB only allowed two goals on seven man-up opportunities.
The Gaucho offense struggled to convert on their opportunities. UCSB only scored on three of the 11 man-up chances, with nine of them coming in the second half.
The Gauchos may not have made the most of the 6-on-5 shots, but they did post a respectable comeback. UCSB scored two goals near the end of the third quarter, one of them coming with only one second left on the clock. The Gauchos outscored Stanford in the third and at the end of the period the score was close, with UCSB only down two, 7-5.
The comeback fell short, and both teams scored one goal a piece in the fourth period making the final score 8-6.
UCSB now looks ahead to next Saturday, Oct. 23 when they host No. 8 Long Beach State (7-7, 0-1) in conference play. All the action starts at noon at Campus Pool.
