Oct. 23, 2010
SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- - On a beautiful sunny day at Campus Pool, No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (10-5, 1-1) came back to defeat No. 8 Long Beach State (7-8, 0-2), 11-10 in sudden victory overtime in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game.
The first period was back and forth, the Gauchos went up early with a goal by Matt Gronow, but the 49ers came back to tie it at one, and then scored again to take a 2-1 lead with 1:02 left in the first period. By the end of the period, UCSB was leading 3-2, after getting two goals from senior Milos Golic.
In the second period, the 49ers came back strong, they played good defense and held the Gauchos to one goal, while they scored four. They took a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Previously, the Gauchos have played well coming out of halftime, outscoring their opponents 34-26 in the third period, and this game was no exception. Golic recorded his fourth goal of the game, just over one minute into the period. UCSB then tied the game at six with an amazing goal from eight-meters out by Brian Shoemaker. Long Beach State recored a goal from Alexsandr Petrovic with 2:23 on the clock and took a 7-6 lead into the fourth.
The 49ers scored 18 seconds into the fourth period but 21 seconds later, the Gauchos answered right back with a goal from Evan Dellinger to put the score at 8-7.
Long Beach State then received two goals from Carter Taylor and Dan Matulis making their lead, 10-7. From there on, the game belonged to UCSB. The Gauchos stole the momentum and scored three straight goals, two from Golic and one from Joe Plume.
The Gaucho defense, after allowing the quick goals from the 49ers at the top of the period, was also on cue in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Myles Christian had four blocks and the defense stopped Long Beach from converting on three man-up opportunities in the period.
At the end of regulation, the teams were tied at 10.
The game moved to overtime, but both teams were playing solid defense and neither team scored a goal. The game continued by moving to another three-minute overtime, but no one scored in that period either.
The game would have to be decided in a sudden victory three-minute overtime period.
The Gauchos won the first possession and earned a 6-on-5 opportunity with 2:34 left in overtime. Just 10 seconds into the man-up advantage, Golic hit his seventh goal of the game and won the game for UCSB, 11-10.
By scoring seven goals, Golic led the Gauchos in the game and tied his career-high for goals in a game. Also posting goals for UCSB were Dellinger, Plume, Gronow and Shoemaker with one a piece.
With the win, the Gauchos improved to 10-5 on the season and 1-1 in MPSF play. Their next game is another MPSF competition, tomorrow, Oct. 24 at No. 2 USC (15-2, 1-2) at McDonald's Swim Stadium. The action begins at 12 pm.
