Stockton, Calif. -
The No. 7 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team upset No. 6 Pacific in Stockton, 9-5. The Gauchos improve to 16-10, 1-2 in the MPSF while the Tigers fall to 14-10 on the season and 2-2 in the MPSF. Seven Gauchos scored and junior goalie Rick Wright had 11 saves in goal to give UCSB the win.
Both teams started slow, as each team scored just one goal in the first period to end tied 1-1. Pacific junior Duje Kaurloto took advantage of a five-meter penalty by finding the back of the cage for Pacific, after senior Clint McLaughlin drew the penalty.
In the second period the Gauchos got on board first as sophomore driver Dane Lindstrom scored to give UCSB a 2-1 advantage. The lead was short lived, however, as Tiger player Matt Turnbull tied the game at two with a goal less than a minute later. UCSB sophomore driver Miles Price gave the Gauchos a 3-2 advantage, scoring his first of two goals of the day with less than a minute remaining in the half. Turnbull brought the game to three all with a goal before halftime.
The Gauchos had the advantage until the third quarter when junior Dragan Bakic gave the Tigers their first lead of the game scoring less than a minute into the period. The Santa Barbara offense responded quickly, less than a minute later before Bakic capitalized on a power play to give the Tigers a 5-4 lead. UCSB sophomore two-meter Ratko Paunovic connected on his sole goal of the game for UCSB to make the score 5-5 heading into the fourth.
Santa Barbara dominated the fourth and final period of the game, scoring four unansered goals to earn the win 9-6. Junior goalie Rick Wright had a match-high 11 saves on the day in goal for UCSB.
