Gauchos Fall to No. 1 Cal, 12-5

Nov. 6, 2010

BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 1 Cal (17-2, 5-0) received four goals from junior attacker Ivan Rackov as it cruised to a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara (10-7, 1-3), 12-5, on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal scored the first two goals of the game as Brian Dudley and Luka Saponjic each tallied a point in the first period. The momentum shifted to UCSB as Matt Gronow and Lazar Komadinic scored the next two goals to tie the contest, 2-2, with 3:14 left in the first quarter.

Cal regained the advantage with a pair of goals to end the first with a 4-2 advantage.

The Gauchos received a big play from Brian Shoemaker when he scored early in the second quarter. His goal brought the game within one at 4-3, but it wasn't enough and the Bears went on to receive two straight goals from Rackov and another from Zach White. Cal never looked back from there.

The score of the second period directly resembled the score of the first with Cal scoring four goals and the Gauchos only scoring two. This put the Bear's lead at 8-4 heading into halftime.

The Gauchos came out of halftime sluggish and they failed to score a goal in the third period while giving up three goals to Cal.

The Gauchos seemed to work out their defensive problems after the third quarter, only giving up one goal in the fourth period but they couldn't find a way to score. UCSB only scored one goal in the last quarter of play and lost, 12-5.

Gronow had a big day for the Gauchos, scoring two goals. Komadinic, Shoemaker and Zsombor Vincze each scored a goal as well.

Milos Golic was held scoreless for only the third time this season. The other two occurrences happened on Oct. 3 versus USC and Sept. 26 against UC Irvine.

The Bears have now won nine in a row, while UCSB has lost two in a row. The Gauchos look to rebound tomorrow, Nov. 7 when they head north to play No. 7 Pacific (12-8, 1-3) in Stockton at Chris Kjeldsen Pool at noon.
