UCSB Defeats Pepperdine 8-7, Will Play For Fifth-Place at MPSF Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore utility player Zsombor Vincze scored with 6:21 to play in the fourth quarter lifting UC Santa Barbara to an 8-7 victory over Pepperdine in the second round of the Moutain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Cal's Spieker Aquatics Complex.
With the win, the Gauchos advance to Sunday's fifth-place game where they will face UCLA at 12:30 p.m.
UCSB improves to 19-13 on the year while Pepperdine drops to 26-10. Today's contest marked the fifth this season between the two teams, the Gauchos had lost the last three contests.
Adam Hewko and Clayton Snyder each had a pair of goals for the Waves while Jack Curley posted a team-best six saves.
The game saw seven ties and six lead changes with neither team leading by more than a single goal before a winner was decided.
For the second consecutive year, the Gauchos will be playing for fifth-place at the MPSF Championships. In 2006 they defeated Pacific, 15-12 to place fifth.
The Gauchos have faced UCLA just once this season and were handed their biggest margin of loss this year, falling 14-6 to the Bruins on Nov. 10.
UCLA has had a rough MPSF Tournament, falling to UC Irvine 10-9 in sudden victory overtime on Friday before posting a 13-9 overtime win against Long Beach State today.
