UCSB Picked Sixth in MPSF Preseason Poll

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team has been ranked No. 6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Preseason Coaches' Poll it was announced today by the conference office. Cal was picked as the preseason favorite after earning 58 points and four of the nine first-place votes.

UCSB earned 31 points in the poll, just one point behind No. 5 UC Irvine and 13 points ahead of No. 7 Long Beach State. UCLA, which won the MPSF Tournament title in 2009, ranked second with 55 points and two first-place votes while No. 3 Stanford was just one point behind the Bruins and also earned two first-place votes. Defending NCAA Champion USC was ranked fourth in the poll with 44 points and one first-place vote.

The Gauchos expect to return 15 letterwinners from the 2009 team that went 13-16 and finished seventh at the MPSF Tournament. Among the Gaucho returners are the three top goal-scorers from last season, including First Team All-American and All-MPSF pick senior Milos Golic, who scored 77 goals in 2009. Honorable Mention All-American Zsombor Vincze also returns for his senior year after tallying 38 goals last season.

Other notable returners are junior center Noah Smith (35 goals, 54 ejections drawn), senior goalkeeper Fraser Bunn (9.7 saves per game) and sophomore Brian Shoemaker (17 goals, 43 ejections drawn).

UCSB will open the 2010 season the weekend of Sept. 4-5 when it plays in a pair of tournaments at UCLA and Pepperdine. The Gauchos will open at home the following weekend against UC San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 11.

All season ticket packages include tickets for the 2010 Men's College Cup, which is being hosted by UCSB on Dec. 10-12 at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium. Individual season tickets start at just $75 and include one ticket to all home men and women's regular season games and one 2010 Men's College Cup all-session ticket. UCSB staff and faculty can purchase their season tickets for a reduced rate of $50.
