Gauchos Host 2010 Home Opener
The UC Santa Barbara men's water polo team will host its 2010 home opener this Saturday as it welcomes visiting UC San Diego to Campus Pool for a 12 p.m. non-conference game. Admission is free to all UCSB home water polo games.
For The Record
The Gauchos opened the 2010 season last Sunday when they played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a neutral site contest at Pepperdine. UCSB cruised to a 15-3 victory over the Stags behind multiple-goal performances from Milos Golic (5), Brian Bishop (3), Zsombor Vincze (3) and Scott Bishop (2). This marks the fifth-consecutive season that UCSB has opened its season with a win.
The Wigo File
A three-time Olympian and former captain of the USA Water Polo Men's National Team, Wolf Wigo is now in his sixth season as the head coach at UC Santa Barbara. During his tenure with the Gauchos, Wigo has led UCSB to an 84-72 record. During the past four seasons, Wigo has led the Gauchos to consecutive top-seven year-end national rankings. Wigo has also coached four players to All-American honors including Milos Golic, who is a three-time All-American for the Gauchos.
Golic Goal Watch
Three-time All-American Milos Golic is now in his senior year with the Gauchos and is within reach of two major feats. The first is becoming UCSB's all-time goals leader and the second is becoming just the fourth athlete in school history to become a four-time All-American. While he will have to wait till the end of the year to see if he has garnered All-American recognition, he could be just games away from becoming the most prolific Gaucho scorer in the last 27 years. With his five goals last Sunday, Golic brought his career count to 217, surpassing third-ranked John Dobrott's (1976-79) 214 goals. The Belgrade, Serbia native is now just 28 goals away from surpassing Larry Mouchawar's (1980-83) 27-year old school record.
Taking On The Tritons
UC San Diego enters this weekend with a 2-2 overall record and will face Cal Lutheran on Friday before traveling to Santa Barbara. The Tritons defeated Air Force and La Verne last weekend and fell to Loyola Marymount and Pacific. The Gauchos and Tritons met twice during the 2009 season with UCSB topping UCSD, 15-12, on Sept. 5 and then 9-7 on Oct. 16.
Seniors Go Streaking
With his five goals in the season opener, senior Milos Golic stretched his scoring streak to eight consecutive games with multiple goals, extending his season-ending streak from 2009. Meanwhile, senior Zsombor Vincze extended his streak to four consecutive games with multiple goals after posting a hat trick last week. Senior Brian Bishop is also amidst a three-game scoring streak.
Rank and Order
UCSB moved up one spot from its preseason national ranking to sixth in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll. The Gauchos were picked to finish sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation in a preseason poll of the conference coaches.
After Saturday's contest with the Tritons, the Gauchos will be back in action the weekend of Sept. 18-19 when they travel to Berkeley, Calif. for the annual NorCal Tournament. The tournament pool will feature several of the nation's top-20 ranked programs. The Gauchos' first tournament opponent will be announced early next week.
