SoCal Tournament Central

• This Week In Water Polo
No. 7 UC Santa Barbara will join 15 other teams this weekend at the SoCal Tournament being hosted by Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount this Saturday and Sunday. The annual tournament boasts 14 of the nation's top 18 ranked teams, including UCSB. The first of the Gauchos' four scheduled games will be against No. 8 UC Irvine at 9:20 a.m. on Saturday at Pepperdine's Raleigh Runnels Aquatic Center, the match-up will mark the third this season between the two programs.

• For The Record
UCSB carries a 9-4 overall record into this weekend's action. The Gauchos have posted a 5-2 record in neutral site contests this season. After holding the No. 9 ranking in last week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-20 Coaches Poll, the Gauchos have been bumped up to the No. 7 ranking in this week's poll.

• Gauchos Open MPSF Play with 1-1 Split
Last Saturday UCSB opened its MPSF schedule at No. 1 USC. The Gauchos hung tight with the Trojans through the first quarter, trailing by just one after the first eight minutes of play, but UCSB proved to be outmatched with USC capturing the 17-5 conference victory. The following day, the Gauchos rebounded and upset then-ranked No. 8 UC Irvine, defeating the Anteaters 14-12. With the split, UCSB now holds a 1-1 mark in the MPSF. On Tuesday, the Gauchos hosted Iona College for a non-conference game at Campus Pool. UCSB outscored the Gaels 16-2 to pick up its second home win of the 2008 season.

• And The Awards Go To...
Sophomore utility player Milos Golic was named the MPSF Mikasa Co-Player of the Week in addition to earning 1 Gaucho of the Week honors. Golic led the Gauchos over the weekend, tallying 10 of the team's 19 goals between UCSB's pair of MPSF contests. In Sunday's win over UC Irvine, Golic notched a career-best seven goals. The previous day, he had three of UCSB's five goals against No. 1 USC. This season, Golic has collected 39 goals with an average of 3.25 goals per game, which currently leads the MPSF by almost an entire goal. The sophomore is amidst a 17-game scoring streak, dating back to the 2007 season. This year he has scored in all 12 contests and has had multiple goals in 11 games. Additionally, he leads the team with 10 assists this season.

• He's A Brick...House
Golic was not the only one that had a career-best showing on Sunday in Irvine. Junior goalkeeper Michael Robinson also had a standout performance as he tallied a career-best 14 saves in the victory over the Anteaters. This season, Robinson has evenly split time in the cage with sophomore Fraser Bunn and has averaged 9.3 saves per game, ranking fourth among MPSF goalies. Bunn manned the goal against USC and tallied eight saves and collected seven blocks in the first half of the win over Iona. He currently averages 9.1 saves per contest.

• The Price Is Right
The only other Gaucho, next to Golic, to crack double-digit goals this season is senior Miles Price who has tallied 19. His average of 1.73 goals per contest at the beginning of the week ranked him ninth among MPSF players. In the Sept. 6 contest against Loyola Marymount, Price tallied his 100th career goal and has now recorded 116 in his four-year career with UCSB, ranking him 15th among all-time Gaucho career goal leaders.

• News From The Ant Hill
UC Irvine has posted a 2-6 overall record this season, with a 10-8 win over UC San Diego last weekend and a narrow 10-9 victory over UCSB on Sept. 20 accounting for its only two victories of the season. Sophomore Brandon Johnson leads the team, and ranks second in the conference behind Golic, with his average of 2.38 goals per game. Goalkeeper Matt Johnson leads the squad with his average of 6.14 saves per game, ranking ninth in the MPSF, and averages 7.86 goals against.
