The Gaucho Record
No. 14 UC Santa Barbara enters the week with a record of 13-15 overall, 0-6 in the MPSF. UCSB is coming off a week in which it split its two matches to Loyola Marymount and Stanford. On Thursday UCSB downed No. 10 Loyola Marymount at home 7-3. Senior Ramiro Saldain netted three goals for the second straight game (three in a 7-6 loss to Cal on Nov. 6). In addition, sophomore Matt Tilburg found the cage to extend, but also conclude, his scoring streak at six matches. On Saturday, the Gauchos faced off against then-ranked No. 4 Stanford and fell by a count of 14-6. Not only is this weekend big for the seniors, the Gauchos as a whole will be searching for their first MPSF victory of the season.
Sunday's match against UC Irvine will be the last home match for four Gaucho seniors. Senior two-meter defender Jarrod Muenter, drivers Ramiro Saldain and Bret DeMuth, and goalkeeper Jon Bonafede will finish up their Gaucho tenure after excellent careers at UCSB. Muenter, an Alamo, Calif. native, prepped at San Ramon Valley High School before coming to UCSB for the 2001 season. Muenter redshirted his freshman year, but over the past four years he has amassed 26 goals headed into this weekend. Saldain played at Royal High School in Simi Valley, Calif. before starting his successful four-year playing career at UCSB in 2002. Like Muenter, Saldain redshirted his first season before taking to the water and netting 62 career goals to date. DeMuth, who transferred to UC Santa Barbara as a junior from West Valley College, has found the cage on 19 occasions so far in his two-year career as a Gaucho. Bonafede transferred to UCSB after an excellent career at Mt. San Antonio College and found time in goal for the Gauchos in 2004. The Alta Loma, Calif. native tallied 285 saves in his first season as a Gaucho. Bonafede has collected 49 saves so far this season to give him 334 saves in his career at UCSB.
Scouting the 49ers

No. 4 UC Irvine enters the weekend with a record of 16-10, 5-2 in the MPSF.
