Cross Country Gains Experience in the Midwest

SOUTH BEND, IN. - The UCSB men's cross country team placed 17th in a loaded field at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Running without the reigning Big West Champion, Bryan Guijarro, who is coming off an early season injury, the Gauchos were led by senior Shyan Vaziri


Competing in the "Blue" division, the Gauchos were up against five teams ranked in the top-30 in the NCAA. Opting to give his athletes exposure against some of the best teams in the country, Head Coach Pete Dolan's squad defeated one, Arizona State (#18).

Vaziri finished 58th out of 167 runners. He completed the five mile course in 24:46.0, averaging 4:57.2 mile splits. This is the first time in his UCSB career that Vaziri has taken the No. 1 scoring slot for the Gauchos. 

Running No. 2 for the first time in his career, Brad Littooy placed 74th overall with a time of 24:52.7. His mile splits were also under 5 minutes, covering the course in 4:58.5's. 

Also a first, Carlos Guijarro ran in the No. 3 position. Finishing in 97th, Guijarro crossed the line in 25:03.9. This is the first time in his career that he has cracked the scoring five. This was nearly a 12 second lifetime best for Guijarro. 

Anthony Ortolan, running with a cold, ran a solid race and took the No. 4 slot. Ortolan finished in 25:09.6. His mile splits were 5:01.9. 

Rounding out the scoring order, Andrew Farkas placed 111th in a time of 25:15.2. This is the third straight meet that Farkas has been in the scoring line-up. 

Running a steady race, Jackson Bright took the No. 6 spot, finishing in 114th, on the heels of Farkas in 25:16.8. 

Finishing in the No. 7 position was Andrew Verdin. Crossing the line in 25:40.6, Avila placed 139th overall. 

UP Next

The Gauchos will travel North up the 101 to compete in Sunnyvale at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on October 17th. The Bronco Invitational is known for having one of the fastest courses in the state.
