Gauchos take 3rd with B team
Sept. 11, 2005
On Saturday morning, an 8,000m course was cut short to 7,000m when the race took a wrong turn at the UC Irvine Invitational in Huntington Beach's Central Park. Sending a "B" team down south, the Gauchos wound up still finishing in third place with 104 points just ahead of UCI and UC San Diego. Chico St. won the Invitational with 18 points.
For UCSB, Justin Coburn (Jr.) got out near the front of the field. Coming through in approximately 4:55 through the mile he was looking strong as he entered the 2nd and 3rd miles. Just a few places back, a pack of Gaucho freshman helped each other out through the middle part of the race as they systematically moved up towards Coburn.
With the lead bike missing a turn, the field cut out 1,000 meters from the third mile. Coburn after getting out good continued to inch his way into the top fifteen. In one of his best cross country races for UCSB, he would wind up nabbing 11th place with a time of 23:15.8.
Waleed Totari (Fr.) and Daniel Cuevas (Fr.) ran together for the entirety of the race as they packed it up with teammate Scott Smith (Fr.) throughout the first half. A strong last mile saw them come up on Coburn with Totari taking 13th in 23:16.6 and Cuevas 15th in 23:18.2. Smith, continuing to show improvement in the early part of the season would wind up 27th in 23:42.8. The Gauchos fifth scorer would come from Stewart Harwell who crossed the line in 42nd with a time of 24:07.
The UCSB Men next travel to Palo Alto, CA to compete in the Stanford Invitational on September 24th.
